), #The official statement from Microsoft/Skype is: "Skype support for Windows XP and Vista users has ended. You will need to update your OS to Windows 7 or higher to continue using Skype on the same device."
An alternative possibility to use Skype on WinXP is to use the IE browser & URL https:\\login.live.com using your Skype log-in details/password. Have not yet tested this on a WinXP machine, but the URL runs OK on a Win7 machine

In fact I discovered that my computer had only level 3 of the Windows Installer. I have since downloaded level 4.5. Could THAT have been the problem?
[Updated ]
Well nobody commented on my last note but things have changed a bit. I just was able to have a hour long conversation with my brother in New Zealand (I am in Spain) but could not get the video to work at all no matter what buttons I pressed, I could get a whole live screen of myself (!) and if I pressed another button a very small circle with my own picture (still) but no way could I see HIS live picture or he mine. Can SOMEONE please tell me what I am doing wrong. Everything else seems normal skype stuff.
