Very good news for fans of classic Skype for Windows, as today the developers released a new version: Skype 7.41.0.101 for Windows. However, there are no details about this version, and I did not notice any novelties (even the translator is still not available)…

), #No Updater.exe means there's no longer a Skype Update service, and that means there's no hint of an update setting in Skype's Options.
In short, Skype does NOT want you to update to new versions of Classic beyond this one, which won't be a problem, since this is highly likely the Last Version Ever of this line.

Nevertheless, I agree with you — I think the classic version will no longer be actively supported. So, no updates, no problems :|

), # ↑But when using SkypeSetupFull.exe (http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-full) on W10 to update 7.40, all of the things I mentioned are true. Updater.exe did exist on my system from versions before 7.41--I'm looking at an image I made at the beginning of the month. There it is. The service also existed. I remember, because I always had to disable it. And the option to opt in to automatic updating also existed in Skype's Advanced section (I always disabled that, too). All are gone now, which is actually good.

), # ↑It really pisses me off, this trend towards dumbed-down apps made for idiots, removing every last possible feature with the excuse that it might be confusing to the technically illiterate. Or, in corporate speak, "streamlining". Along with optimising every user interface for fat-finger touchscreen smushing, everything in gargantuan size with lots of whitespace, as if nobody still worked on a proper computer with proper input devices anymore.
Before "applications" became "apps", having features and options used to be considered a good thing. Heck, at this point it's so bad that Apple, of all companies, is now almost the only major software developer that is still proudly announcing features they added, rather than removed.
I have already eliminated Skype from my personal communications after they locked out third-party clients many years ago. And the new Windows client is so bad, that even in my company, most people are no longer using it and have switch to alternatives. If dumbing-down software was really what users wanted, I wonder why most of those who do it end up going down the drain.

), #Skype translator was implemented in the previous version I had, 7.40.0.104. And a couple of versions I had before that one. It looks like the new version, 7.41.0.101, removed it or changed how to use it. But the option is no longer in the same spot. So it's not that the translator is "still" not available in Skype Classic. It was added in a long time back, but in this new version they seemed to of removed it. Or maybe just changed how to access it.
[Updated ]
According to Skype: "Please be informed that beginning January 22nd, 2018, Skype Translator has been discontinued for old Skype clients (Skype for Desktop v7.40 and Skype for Web)." So it was just removed, but it was in Skype Classic's last several versions. Not that it bothers me. I disabled it in the options when it was first added.
+1207
), # ↑So, what do you think, why they removed Skype Translator from the classic version, but continue to develop it on the new version? ;)

), #I love it, but something wrong with my audio again.
I hear echoes, a robot-like voice from my friend's side. They can hear me fine. Also, I have no issue if I log in on my cell phone. Test sounds the robot like as well. This is exactly what happened a few months ago when I tried to download a classic version, audio problems come with it, so then I had to switch to new version of Skype and audio problems were gone in an instant. Trying again:)))
Any suggestions? Is it a bug?

), #I have Win7/64 and downloaded now from here the version 7.41. As I am no PC-Einstein, except the advice to enable automatic updates afterwards, so that it will not update to 8 again, what else should I do, and how exactly ? Should I deinstall first the new version? Or just run the download 7.41? I cannot find the old version on my PC any more. It must have been deleted with the install of the new version, I guess. I honestly tried to understand the above comments, but they are just too "high" for me. Would very much appreciate your support in easy understandable steps-thank you very much.

I already wrote my question here, but cannot see it. In case it will appear twice, sorry.
Installed the new version...big mistake! Downloaded from here the 7.41.....
I cant find my previous version on my PC any more. This 7.41... is the version where we can disable "automatic update"? That option I had before, so it will not update automatically to the latest version again.
Do I have to deinstall the new version first? Or just run the download? Thank you.

), # ↑1) Uninstall Skype 8, then download the skype_7.41.0.101.exe from this page and install it as usual. Finally, run DisableSkypeUpdater.vbs (this script disables the update settings from the registry, deletes the update service, blocks the update installer, and deletes the file checking new updates).
2) Create your own Skype portable version. If you are interested, check this instruction: How to create a portable Skype for Windows.

Thanks again!

), #Though this page mentions Skype classic v7.41, I've walked through the DisableSkypeUpdater.vbs script and on my Windows 10 (Spring 2018 update) system it doesn't seem that any of the file paths or registry entries exist/ do anything. I've manually added all of the registry keys and classic Skype still tries to get me to foolishly accepts its suggestion to update Skype. There are no scheduled tasks nor services with Skype in the name. There is no Updater\ subdirectory.
Is this still expected to work with Skype 7.41.0.101 on Windows 10?
many thanks,

), # ↑So, what parts of the script (since none of the files are there anymore, and I've manually made the registry changes, to no effect) still do something that would prevent Skype 7.41.0.101 from trying to push the updates to the user?

), #-- Note at least these changes in the 8.x and 12.x: There are still two versions, UWP AND Desktop versions. But the "desktop 8.x" is just about as dumbed down as the UWP version.
-- You can NOT go to an "about screen", so you must use task manager or Process Explorer, just to tell what version you are running. I guess it's now a secret.
-- History stored locally is GONE! So, you can no longer see ANY new messages added to local history. (The DESKTOP VERSION, 8.x is confirmed to leave the MAIN.DB message database in the LOCAL, logged in user's APPDATA folder, but nothing new will be added.) So, no Skyperious.exe or MySQL to query messages. Who knows what is being stored in the cloud, or how far it will go back, how you can search, or how long until they whack that feature as well.
-- GRAB and ARCHIVE this MAIN.DB file, before it is DELETED! The UWP version--I don't know what, if anything it does to history, when installing.
I loved Daniel's comment near the top --- well put --- WHAT are they thinking?? They sure aren't listening to ardent knowledgeable users!

2) Click on your avatar then go to “About”
3) Execute

command in any chatAs for old main.db, it may be useful to know that Skype 8 provides a tool to export history in HTML format.
+8
), # ↑Do remember that the history database still will no longer be added to -- no new messages. Until evidence shows differently, this file should remain... but could still be deleted during an update.
Need to investigate exactly what the true status of message archiving that occurs now in the cloud, and in the future as well as we can predict.

And it sill shows the warning that this Skype will soon be retired...
I think, the more people use Skype Classic, the later it will be decomissioned... So install and enjoy! :)

Must say 8.x Skype keeps getting better.
They even added Away status back a few days/weeks ago (??).
This was sorely missing for a long time in 8.x Skype. :) Now it is there!
